Abstract:Traumatic brain injury ( TBI) is a serious and complex trauma, which is known to injury the central nervous system directly and cause several secondary effects, resulting in peripheral organs dysfunction. The close relationship between brain injury and subsequent intestinal mucosal injury has been recognized. This patholog-ic course may not only influence the intestinal itself but also impair the remote organs, leading to systemic inflamma-tory response syndrome and multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome. The treatment of TBI should focus on the control of primary nerve injury as well as the prevention of complications.Ghrelin,a gastrointestinal peptide with a major role in regulating feeding and metabolism, has recently been investigated for its neuroprotective effects and ameliora-ting intestinal barrier dysfunction, which suggest Ghrelin treatment may be a useful intervention after TBI in clinic.
