Management of traumatic bone defect with Masquelet technique

Abstract:Objective To explore the treatment effect of Masquelet technique in patients with posttraumatic or infectious bone defects.Methods Nine patients with large bone defect due to trauma and infection were treated with Masquelet technique from Jan.2009 to Jan.2012. There were 7 males and 2 females with a mean age of 53 (27-79)years.In the first treatment stage: patients were thoroughly debrided,antibiotic-impregnated cement was implanted into the defect to stimulate and induce the production of periosteum.In the second stage:after 6-8 weeks the cement was removed and replaced with autologous cancellous bone.Results Patients were followed up for an average of 7 months, showing good osseous consolidation. Conclusion The Masquelet technique can achieve a promising outcome in the management of posttraumatic or infectious bone defects and is worth of wide application.
