Abstract:Objective To explore the efficiency of percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty ( PKP) for chronic vertebral compression fracture and pseudarthrosis. Methods A retrospective analysis of 15 patients from Sep.2009 to Mar.2014,who were diagnosed of chronic vertebral compression fracture and pseudarthrosis was carried out.All the patients were applied PKP.The visual analogue scales(VAS) were compared before and after operation to as-sess the level of pain.Macnab scoring was used for the assessment of daily life ability.X-ray examination was also performed to determine the vertebral sagittal index before and after operation and the correction of the vertebral body. Results All the patients underwent the operation without any complication.According to the rule of VAS, pain relieved obviously on all patients after operation.Values of VAS on the 1st day (2.53 ±0.51),1st month (2.06 ±0.70) and 3rd month(2.13 ±0.51) after operation were all significantly decreased compared with the val-ue before operation(7.47 ±0.64,P<0.05).The daily life ability was also distinctively improved one month after operation(P<0.05).The sagittal index of injured vertebra after operation (25.8 ±5.12) also decreased compared with pre-operation(34.4 ±5.10,P<0.05).Conculsion PKP could stablize the pseudarthrosis formed in the ver-tebrae after chronic compression fracture. It could improve the daily life ability by relieving the pain and decreasing the kyphosis of injured vertebrae.
