Abstract:Iron metabolism refers to the dynamic homeostatic process of iron in the body, which maintains normal physiological functions. In HIV/TB co-infected individuals, ferritinophagy is activated to limit iron acquisition by pathogens, but over-activation may trigger ferroptosis and promote human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)replication and Mycobacterium tuberculosis(MTB)growth, thereby affecting the severity of disease. In this paper,we review some of the more representative clinical studies of iron biomarkers,in which HIV/TB co-infection inhibits serum iron, transferrin, and glutathione peroxidation 4(GPX4)expression and up-regulates ferritin and ferredoxin expression, the aim is to explore the potential of iron biomarkers in the diagnosis, disease progression and prognostic assessment of HIV/TB co-infected patients and to provide new perspectives for diagnosis.
