Abstract:It was believed that Hepatitis E virus(HEV)infection is an acute self-limiting disease. In most cases, healthy adults infected with HEV either show no obvious symptoms or only experience mild symptoms, and the virus can usually be cleared spontaneously. However, there have been occasional reports of cases where immunocompromised individuals developed chronic HEV infections after being infected with the virus in recent years. As a result, chronic HEV infection has gradually attracted extensive attention from scholars.Once HEV infection becomes chronic, liver pathology in approximately 60%of patients shows progressive liver fibrosis, and 10%of patients can rapidly progress to liver cirrhosis. Therefore, chronic HEV infection poses a serious threat to the health, safety and quality of life of specific populations. At present, relevant research has achieved certain breakthroughs and progress in the mechanisms of HEV chronicity. This article aims to review these aspects from the perspectives of immunology, etiology, genetics, molecular biology, etc.,hoping to provide a reference for further research on pathological mechanisms and clinical prevention and treatment.
