Abstract:Objectives To analyze the serological characteristics of the HIV antibody indeterminate results of voluntary blood donors' specimens in Chenzhou from 2012 to 2016, which were tested by initial screening and reinspection as positive reaction results and then confirmed by western blotting as indeterminate results, and to provide the basis for clinical safe blood transfusion and blood use. Methods Western blotting was applied to test 233 specimens from Chenzhou Blood Center from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016, which were positive reaction results by screening and reinspection, and the belt types of indeterminate specimens were analyzed. Results Among 233 specimens, 43 (18.45%) were positive, 107 (45.92%) were negative, and 83 (35.62%) were indeterminate. Among the HIV antibody indeterminate specimens, there were 54 (65.06%) males and 29 (34.94%) females. There were 2, 54 and 27 cases in the age group of<20 years, 20-39 years and 40-59 years, respectively. Nine belt types were observed, irrespective of a single and combined indeterminate belt. The single belt type was mainly p24, found in 53 cases (63.86%), while combined belt types were mainly p17 and p24, found in 10 cases (12.05%). Eleven cases completed the follow-ups after 4 weeks, and the indeterminate results in 4 cases turned to be positive, including 2 cases of p24, a case of p24 and gp160, a case of p24 and p66. The remaining 7 cases showed no progression. Conclusions There is a lower positive rate among confirmed specimens of the blood center. The nucleic acid detection or follow-up after 4 weeks can be performed to confirm the negative and indeterminate specimens.
