Abstract:Objective To investigate the characteristics of monocytic myeloid derived suppressor cells (mMDSCs) in peripheral blood of patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Methods Seventy-nine patients with ALD and 23 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled in the study. The frequency of mMDSCs and arginase+mMDSCs were detected through FACS. Relationships of mMDSCs frequency with disease progression and clinical indicators were further analyzed. Results mMDSC frequencies in peripheral blood of ALD patients were significantly higher than those in HCs (P<0.001) and were positively correlated with neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (r=0.263, P=0.019). Further analysis indicated that arginase+mMDSCs frequencies significantly increased in ALD patients compared with HCs (P<0.001) and were also positively correlated with neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (r=0.305, P=0.015). Conclusions mMDSCs in peripheral blood of ALD patients increase significantly and closely relate with disease progression. The present study provides a basis for elucidating the mechanism of mMDSCs in ALD.
