Abstract:Carbapenem antibiotics are generally considered as the most potent antimicrobial agents in the treatment of severe infections caused by common gram-negative bacilli, including those caused by antimicrobial-resistant strains. However, as carbapenem antimicrobial agents are widely used in clinical practice, the bacteria producing carbapenemases are emerging. Enterobacteriaceae is regarded as the most common gram-negative bacilli in clinical practice, carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE) isolation rate is also increasing year by year. CRE has a fast spread, wide range and high fatality rate. It has been popular in many countries, thus threatening global public health and attracting more attention. This article reviews the epidemics, drug resistance mechanism, detection methods, treatment options, prevention and control strategies of CRE.
