Abstract:HBV infection is the major cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Over the past two decades, there are currently two classes of drugs approved for the treatment of hepatitis B: a finite antiviral and immunomodulatory treatment with peg-interferon or long-term treatment with nucleos (t) ide analogues. While they can potently suppress the virus replication, they have low rate of HBsAg clearance and common virological relapse after the cessation of therapy. So it is difficult to achieve clinical cure or complete cure. Now appearring of new biomarkers may open the way of stopping nucleos (t) ide analogues clinical use safely. Meanwhile various anti-HBV drugs or biological agents are in the development pipeline, which can bring hope to thousands of hepatitis B patients.
