Abstract:ObjectiveTo analyze 136 patients with urethral condyloma acuminatum, and evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) on urethral condyloma acuminatum.MethodsA retrospective analysis was made for 136 patients with urethral condyloma acuminatum treated with topical ALA-PDT in our department from January 2013 to December 2014. The epidemiological characteristics and the efficacy were analyzed.ResultsOf the 136 patients with urethral condyloma acuminatum, HPV-DNA type 6 and type 11 dominated, male patients aged 20-40 years old accounted for the majority, and sexual transmission was the main mode of transmission. After being treated with topical ALA-PDT, the warts disappeared completely. During the 6-month follow-up after the treatment, the recurrence rate was 4.4%; after 12-month follow-up, no recurrence was found with a curative rate of 100%. The main adverse reactions of ALA-PDT included edema, pain and erythema on local skin.ConclusionsUrethral condyloma acuminatum is mainly caused by sexual transmission. ALA-PDT is an effective and safe therapy for urethral condyloma acuminatum, with a higher rate of wart elimination and fewer adverse reactions.
