Abstract:HBV preS/S gene mutations may occur spontaneously or may be the consequence of selection by outside pressures. The viral mutants may induce HBV infection through blood transfusion, organ transplantation and mother-to-children transmission, or cause acute, chronic and occult HBV infection. The HBV preS/S gene mutations may lead to the change of biological characteristics of the virus and the immune responses, causing immune escape, immunoprophylaxis failure, HBsAg-negative HBV infection and the aggravation of the disease. It suggests that the mutations are associated with the development of liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, therefore affecting clinical outcome of chronic HBV infection.
