Abstract:Objective To analyze clinical significance of serum procalcitonin (PCT) in patients with bacterial pneumonia and those with smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis (SNPTB). Methods The levels of PCT, hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), white blood cell (WBC) and neutrophil percentage (NEUT%) in 80 patients with bacterial pneumonia (bacterial pneumonia group), 100 SNPTB patients (SNPTB group), and 50 healthy controls (control group) were detected. Results The levels of PCT, ESR, hs-CRP, WBC and NEUT% in bacterial pneumonia group were significantly higher than those in SNPTB group and the control group (P<0.05). The level of PCT in bacterial pneumonia group increased significantly(87.5%), and it was not significantly different between SNPTB group and the control group (P>0.05). Conclusion The level of serum PCT is significantly different between patients with bacterial pneumonia and those with SNPTB, which is of clinical significance in differentiation of bacterial pneumonia and SNPTB.
