Abstract:Shigella is an important pathogen of infectious diarrhea. It is not only a huge burden of disease to the country, but also a serious threat to public health. With the unrational of antibiotics in clinical practice, the problem caused by the isolates of multidrug resistant Shigella has become more and more prominent. Integrons are ancient structures present in bacteria from the broader environment. However, there is still a significant lack of knowledge on how integron-gene cassettes in Shigella species spread and become epidemic. The authors aim to summarize the work of previous studies and make a deeper understanding on the epidemiology and molecular mechanism of integron-mediated antibiotic resistance in Shigella.
