Abstract:Objective To investigate serum cytokine levels of patients with acute mumps orchitis. Methods Thirty patients with acute mumps orchitis (mumps orchitis group) and 30 patients with mumps only without any major complications (mumps group), who were treated in infectious diseases department of our hospital from Jan. 2012 to May 2013, were enrolled in the study. Serum levels of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, interferon γand tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α of the two groups were tested. Results The levels of IL-6 and TNF-αof mumps orchitis group (6.7±3.5 pg/ml, 43.1±28.2 ng/ml) were higher than those of mumps group (3.2±1.5 pg/ml, 32.5±21.1 ng/ml), and the differences were significant between the two groups. Conclusion High serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-αmay be the trigger factors of orchitis in patients with mumps.
