Abstract:microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding single-stranded RNA molecules of about 22 nucleotides, which nega-tively regulate gene expression via translational inhibition or degradation of their target mRNAs. More than 2000 miRNAs have been identified in humans. miRNAs are involved in the regulation of gene expression in multiple cellular processes including cell deve-lopment, proliferation, apoptosis and stress response, and gene mutations or abnormalities in miRNA genes has been reported to be related to cancer incidence. Researches have shown that miRNAs play an important role in HBV or HCV infection and the occur-rence and development of liver cancer. In this article, the authors mainly discuss how HBV/HCV affects host miRNAs in regulating cell proliferation and apoptosis and how miRNAs influence the replication of HBV/HCV.
