Abstract:Considering the initial imperfections of steel compression members, such as initial de-formation and initial eccentricity, and the difference of tension and compression strength of steel, the formula for calculating ultimate load of steel compression members under elastic-plastic buck-ling failure caused by axial eccentric load is derived by the Ježek method. The approximate calcu-lation formula of elastic-plastic ultimate load of a rectangular section steel compression member with two ends simply supported is obtained through studying the influences of strength difference(SD)effect, slenderness and initial defects on ultimate load of elastic-plastic buckling failure of steel compression members. The analytical solution and approximate calculation formula in this paper can be used to solve the elastic-plastic limit load of the steel compression members with ini-tial bending, steel compression members with initial eccentric, ideal center compression members or beam-columns considering SD effect. The results show that the elastic-plastic ultimate load of steel compression members increases by 10.5%~12.2%when SD effect is considered. Therefore, the strength of steel compression members can be fully played when SD effect is considered in practical engineering.
