Study of Friction Damper for Vibration Mitigation of Structures

Abstract：Friction dampers as energy dissipators have been used in aseismic des ign of buildings, however a proper understanding and analysis of the friction pr ocess involved should be extend to their application to 'non-building' structur e s like bridge and truss mast. In this paper, a simple H-shaped friction damper w ith several bolts in every slot of a diagonal is suggested and an easy method to analyze structures with slotted bolted connections and velocity-dependent fric t ion characteristics; the method is simple and can be used in linear and non-lin e ar analysis. A numerical example is carried out using a single degree of freedom (SDOF) structure to verify efficiency of the proposed method. Analytical result s are in better agreements with related experimental results.
