Research on the Relationship between Comorbidities and Colorectal Cancer
Abstract:Colorectal cancer (colorectal cancer, CRC) ranks third among global causes of cancer death. The diagnostic and therapeutic process is often affected by comorbid factors. Epidemiological studies have confirmed that more than 50% of newly diagnosed CRC patients have at least one chronic comorbidity, with cardiovascular disease (cardiovascular disease, CVD), diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD), and renal insufficiency being the most common. These comorbidities directly promote tumor progression through biological mechanisms (such as chronic inflammation and insulin resistance), limit treatment options, increase the risk of surgical and chemotherapy complications, and reduce patient treatment compliance, thereby affecting patient prognosis. Currently, research mostly focuses on the interactive mechanisms between comorbidities and tumor development, while the specific pathways by which comorbidities affect prognosis and the exploration of clinical strategy optimization remain relatively limited. This article aims to conduct a systematic review of existing evidence, analyze the biological effects of comorbidities on CRC patients, optimize clinical decision-making, and provide a theoretical basis for advancing precision medicine in comorbid populations.
