Interpretation of the ASGBI Guidelines for the Management of General Surgical Emergencies in Pregnancy
Abstract:Acute abdominal conditions during pregnancy pose a special challenge in clinical practice, requiring careful consideration of both maternal safety and fetal health. On February 12, 2024, the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) jointly with an international team of experts published the 'Guidelines for the Management of General Surgical Emergencies in Pregnancy' in the British Journal of Surgery. This guideline systematically outlines imaging assessment strategies, timing of surgery, and multidisciplinary management during the perioperative period for general surgical emergencies such as appendicitis, biliary disease, intestinal obstruction, and perianal diseases during pregnancy, and provides clinical recommendations based on the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine evidence levels. This article interprets the core content of the guidelines, focusing on the impact of physiological changes during pregnancy on surgical decision-making, aiming to provide evidence-based support for clinical practice.
