Clinical Observation on the Efficacy of Jianpi Zhangzhuang Formula Combined with Recombinant Human Growth Hormone in the Treatment of Idiopathic Short Stature of Spleen and Kidney Deficiency Type

Abstract：Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Jianpi Zhangzhuang Formula combined with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) in the treatment of children with idiopathic short stature (ISS) of spleen and kidney deficiency type. Methods: A total of 86 cases of children with spleen and kidney deficiency type ISS who visited the Wuhan Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital affiliated with Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from January 2022 to December 2023 were selected as the study subjects. They were randomly divided into a control group (rhGH treatment) and an observation group (Jianpi Zhangzhuang Formula + rhGH treatment), with 43 cases in each group. The growth and development evaluation indicators, endocrine hormones and related metabolic indicators, TCM syndrome scores, and clinical efficacy of the two groups were compared before and after treatment. Results: After treatment, the height (Ht), growth velocity (GV), height standard deviation score (HtSDS), and weight (Wt) values of the observation group were all higher than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). After treatment, the serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), leptin (LEP), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25-(OH)D] in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, while the serum ghrelin level was lower, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). After treatment, the scores for symptoms such as slow growth, thin body, loose muscles, poor appetite, weak limbs, sparse hair, pale or sallow complexion, irregular bowel movements, and incomplete digestion in the observation group were all lower than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). The total effective rate of treatment in the observation group was higher than that in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Compared with single rhGH treatment, the combination of Jianpi Zhangzhuang Formula and rhGH is more effective in improving growth and development indicators, endocrine hormones, and related metabolic indicators in children with spleen and kidney deficiency type ISS, provides better height benefits, and helps improve TCM clinical symptoms.
