Effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupoint Patching as an Adjunctive Therapy for Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with Respiratory Failure
Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effect of traditional Chinese medicine acupoint patching as an adjunctive therapy for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) with respiratory failure. Methods: A total of 84 patients with AECOPD and respiratory failure admitted to the Affiliated Zhumadian Hospital of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from June 2021 to June 2024 were selected as the study subjects and divided into a control group and an observation group according to different treatment plans, with 42 patients in each group. The control group received conventional Western medical treatment, while the observation group received traditional Chinese medicine acupoint patching as an adjunctive therapy on top of the control group's treatment. The pulmonary function, arterial blood gas indicators, TCM syndrome scores, and quality of life were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results: After treatment, the forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC ratio in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). After treatment, the partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (PaO2) and pH in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, while the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in arterial blood (PaCO2) was lower, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). After treatment, the TCM syndrome scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group, and the scores on the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) were higher, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Traditional Chinese medicine acupoint patching as an adjunctive therapy for AECOPD with respiratory failure can promote recovery of lung function, enhance gas exchange function, alleviate clinical symptoms, and improve quality of life.
