Application of Two-dimensional and Three-dimensional Ultrasound in Observing Fetal Soft and Hard Palate for Prenatal Diagnosis of Cleft Palate
Abstract:Objective: To summarize the prenatal ultrasound imaging characteristics, diagnostic methods, and techniques of fetal cleft palate, to improve the diagnostic accuracy of isolated cleft palate, reduce the rate of missed and misdiagnosis, avoid excessive treatment, and reduce birth defects, providing accurate information and basis for prenatal counseling and eugenics. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the data of 534 fetuses with cleft lip and palate and 14 fetuses with isolated cleft palate diagnosed by color Doppler ultrasound from January 2018 to December 2023 at Xuzhou Maternal and Child Health Hospital. The ultrasound diagnosis results were compared with postnatal outcomes to calculate the diagnostic consistency rate. Results: All 534 fetuses with cleft lip and palate were confirmed by postnatal results. Among the 14 cases of isolated cleft palate, 4 were confirmed by postnatal results, 5 were misdiagnosed, and 5 were lost to follow-up. The diagnostic consistency rate for isolated cleft palate was 44.0%, while that for cleft palate combined with cleft lip was 100.0%, resulting in a total diagnostic consistency rate of 98.2%. Conclusion: Two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasound observation of the hard and soft palate via the submandibular approach has high value in the diagnosis of fetal cleft palate.
