Effect of Modified Siaomuyong'an Decoction on Patients with Elderly Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Accompanied by Peripheral Neuropathy of Yin Deficiency and Blood Stasis Syndrome and Its Impact on Vascular Endothelial Function
Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effect of modified Siaomuyong'an decoction on elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accompanied by peripheral neuropathy (PN) of Yin deficiency and blood stasis syndrome, and its impact on vascular endothelial function. Methods: A total of 88 elderly T2DM patients with PN admitted to Nanyang Central Hospital from January 2023 to January 2025 were selected as the study subjects and randomly divided into a control group and a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) group using an envelope method, with 44 cases in each group. The control group received symptomatic treatment such as blood glucose regulation and nerve nutrition, while the TCM group received additional treatment with modified Siaomuyong'an decoction on top of the control group's treatment. The levels of blood glucose indicators [fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)], vascular endothelial function indicators [nitric oxide (NO), endothelin-1 (ET-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)], degree of neuropathy [Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score (TCSS) score], TCM syndrome scores, clinical efficacy, and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results: After treatment, FPG and HbA1c levels in the TCM group were lower than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). After treatment, the serum NO level in the TCM group was higher than that in the control group, while the serum ET-1 and VEGF levels were lower, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). After treatment, the TCSS score and TCM syndrome score in the TCM group were lower than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). The total effective rate of clinical treatment in the TCM group was higher than that in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the overall incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Modified Siaomuyong'an decoction for the treatment of elderly T2DM patients with PN of Yin deficiency and blood stasis syndrome can effectively regulate blood glucose levels, alleviate clinical symptoms, promote improvement of vascular endothelial function, and does not increase adverse reactions.
