Observation on the Effect of Valproate Combined with Modified Tongqiao Huoxue Decoction in the Treatment of Bipolar Disorder During the Manic Episode
Abstract：Objective: To investigate the effect of valproate combined with modified Tongqiao Huoxue Decoction in the treatment of bipolar disorder (BD) during the manic episode. Methods: A total of 68 patients with BD during the manic episode admitted to Jian'an Hospital of Xuchang City from October 2022 to October 2024 were selected as the study subjects and randomly divided into a control group and an observation group using a random number table method, with 34 cases in each group. The control group received valproate treatment, while the observation group received modified Tongqiao Huoxue Decoction in addition to the treatment of the control group. The clinical efficacy, levels of serum-related factors, mania and depression severity, and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results: The total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). After treatment, the serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, while the serum interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels, Brief Rating Scale for Mania (BRMS) scores, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores were lower than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the overall incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The combination of valproate and modified Tongqiao Huoxue Decoction in the treatment of BD during the manic episode can enhance clinical efficacy, regulate neurological function, inhibit inflammatory responses, reduce mania and depression severity, without increasing adverse reactions.
