Major Diseases and Control Measures of Largemouth Bass (IV)
Abstract:The life cycle of fish trypanosomes is relatively complex, with leeches as intermediate hosts. Leeches transmit trypanosomes to fish through biting and blood-feeding. This process generally involves four stages: latent period, development period, infection period, and stable period. After infection by trypanosomes through leech blood-feeding, the parasite first enters the latent period (2-9 days). It then enters the development period (several days to several weeks), during which the trypanosome reproduces by binary fission. A large number of parasites can be observed in the fish's peripheral blood, which may lead to fish death. During the chronic infection period, the number of trypanosomes gradually decreases, and the parasites no longer divide; this state can last for several weeks or remain indefinitely. After the stable period, trypanosomes are completely absent from the fish's peripheral blood, but they may sometimes be found in the head kidney, pseudobranch, or retina of the fish.
