Measures for Crayfish Farming to Deal with Extreme High Temperatures
Abstract:In recent years, extreme climate conditions have occurred frequently, with abnormally high temperatures that last for a long time, bringing great uncertainty to agricultural production, especially crayfish farming. According to meteorological data, there were 27 days with temperatures above 37°C in Jiangyin City in 2024. Continuous high temperatures caused the water temperature in crayfish farming ponds to rise significantly, with surface water temperatures sometimes exceeding 40°C. The non-heat-resistant Egeria densa died in large quantities, and even heat-resistant species such as Ceratophyllum demersum and Vallisneria spirata stopped growing. The water environment for crayfish growth became severely deteriorated, leading to delayed molting, increased mortality, and after the temperature dropped, some crayfish no longer molted, resulting in smaller sizes; some crayfish could not harden after molting and could not be sold; even some hardened crayfish died in large numbers during the later stage of pond retention, causing the yield per mu in some ponds to be only more than 10 kg, and in some ponds, the yield was only a few to dozens of crayfish per mu, resulting in a large loss for crayfish farmers and serious losses.
