Investigation and Analysis of On-site First Aid Ability Among Non-Medical Major Groups in Universities from the Perspective of Health Literacy
Abstract:Objective: To understand the level of knowledge, sources of information, and learning needs of non-medical major students at a local comprehensive university in Gansu Province regarding on-site first aid, and to explore the influencing factors. Methods: A convenience sampling method was used to select 1,050 non-medical major students from a local comprehensive university in Gansu Province. A questionnaire on the current status of on-site first aid knowledge was used to investigate their understanding of on-site first aid knowledge and skills, sources of information, and learning needs. Results: The total score of on-site first aid knowledge and skills among the 1,050 non-medical major students was (23.21±6.20) points, with a pass rate of 48.1%. The pass rates for each dimension, from highest to lowest, were as follows: first aid common sense (97.1%), on-site first aid for common accidental injuries (72.9%), on-site first aid for trauma (44.8%), and knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (12.8%). The factors affecting the on-site first aid knowledge and skills of non-medical major students include gender and interest in on-site first aid. Male students and those who are interested in on-site first aid had significantly higher scores and pass rates compared to female students and those who are not interested in on-site first aid. Conclusion: There are deficiencies in the knowledge and skills of on-site first aid among non-medical major students at a local comprehensive university in Gansu Province, which urgently needs improvement. Considering the high enthusiasm and urgent demand for first aid knowledge among students, the university can make full use of its comprehensive first aid teaching resources to offer general education courses on first aid and establish a long-term mechanism, so as to enhance the first aid ability of non-medical major students and promote the overall improvement of the public's first aid level.
