Effects of Olfactory Training After Budesonide Irrigation on Nasal Cavity Ventilation Function, Nasal Mucosal Cilia Function, and Olfactory Function in Patients After Chronic Sinusitis Surgery
Abstract:Objective: To explore the effects of olfactory training after budesonide irrigation on nasal mucosal cilia function, nasal cavity ventilation function, and olfactory function in patients after chronic sinusitis surgery. Methods: A total of 97 patients who underwent chronic sinusitis surgery from April 2022 to April 2024 were selected as the study subjects and randomly divided into a control group (48 cases) and an observation group (49 cases) using a random number table method. The control group received only budesonide irrigation without olfactory function training, while the observation group received olfactory function training after budesonide irrigation. After 6 weeks of training, the improvement of nasal symptoms, olfactory function, nasal cavity ventilation function, nasal mucosal cilia function, and quality of life were compared between the two groups. Results: After treatment, both the observation group and the control group showed reduced olfactory function and nasal symptom scores, with the observation group showing lower scores than the control group (P < 0.05). Both groups showed decreased nasal resistance (NR) and the distance from the minimum cross-sectional area of the nasal cavity to the anterior nares (DCAN), with the observation group showing smaller values than the control group (P < 0.05). Both groups showed increased nasal cavity volume (NCV) and minimum cross-sectional area (NMCA), with the observation group showing larger values than the control group (P < 0.05). Both groups showed higher nasal mucosal ciliary clearance rates than before treatment, with the observation group showing higher values than the control group (P < 0.05). The nasal mucosal ciliary clearance speed was lower than before treatment, with the observation group showing better results than the control group (P < 0.05). Both groups showed shorter sucrose clearance time than before treatment, with the observation group showing shorter time than the control group (P < 0.05). Both groups showed reduced SNOT-20 scores, with the observation group showing lower scores than the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Olfactory training after budesonide irrigation can effectively alleviate nasal symptoms in patients after chronic sinusitis surgery, improve olfactory function and nasal mucosal cilia function, promote nasal cavity ventilation, and enhance the quality of life of patients.
