The Impact of Family Empowerment Intervention Based on Supportive Care Theory on Middle-to-Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients and Their Caregivers in the Community
Abstract:Objective: To explore the effect of family empowerment intervention based on supportive care theory on the self-efficacy, quality of life, and caregiver burden of patients with middle-to-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: A convenience sample of 100 COPD patients and their caregivers from three communities in Shenyang City from June 2024 to January 2025 was selected. The participants were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group. The control group received routine care and guidance, while the observation group received family empowerment intervention based on supportive care theory. The self-efficacy scale for COPD, COPD assessment test scale, and caregiver burden scale were used to compare the scores of self-efficacy, quality of life, and caregiver burden between the two groups. Results: After the intervention, the scores of caregiver burden and quality of life in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05), while the self-efficacy score was higher (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The application of family empowerment intervention based on supportive care theory can effectively reduce the burden of caregivers of middle-to-late stage COPD patients and improve the patients' self-efficacy and quality of life.
