Application of a Physical Restraint Reduction Program in Neurology ICU Patients
Abstract:Objective: To develop a physical restraint reduction program for neurology ICU patients and evaluate its clinical effectiveness. Methods: A total of 206 patients admitted to the neurology intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital in Nanjing from October 2023 to March 2024 were selected as the study subjects. The control group consisted of 102 patients admitted between October and December 2023, while the observation group included 104 patients admitted between January and March 2024. The control group received conventional physical restraint, while the observation group was subjected to the physical restraint reduction program. The physical restraint rate, unplanned extubation rate, incidence of restraint-related complications, and nursing staff's restraint-related abilities before and after the training program were compared. Results: The physical restraint rate and incidence of restraint-related complications in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). After the training, the scores for knowledge mastery, operational skills, and communication abilities of the nurses were significantly higher than those before the training (P < 0.01). Conclusion: The physical restraint reduction program can reduce the restraint rate in neurology ICU patients, decrease the occurrence of restraint-related complications, and improve the nurses' restraint-related capabilities, standardize the restraint process, and enhance overall nursing quality.
