Advances in the Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Dentofacial Deformities
Abstract:Dentofacial deformity (DFD) is a condition caused by abnormal growth and development of the jaw bones, resulting in an imbalance in the volume, morphological structure, and positional relationship between the upper and lower jaws and other bones, manifesting as abnormal facial appearance, malocclusion, and dysfunction of the oral-facial system, also known as skeletal malocclusion [1]. According to epidemiological surveys at home and abroad, about 40% of the population has malocclusion, of which approximately 5% is caused by jaw developmental abnormalities [1]. DFD not only affects the aesthetic appearance of the face but also influences the development of the maxillofacial bones and soft tissues, and even affects overall health. Studies have shown that it can cause varying degrees of damage to the patient's mental health [2]. The most common treatment for this disease is orthognathic surgery, which emphasizes the need for systematic pre- and post-operative orthodontic intervention to optimize treatment outcomes [3]. Surgery can treat occlusal disorders by repositioning and fixing the upper and lower jaws, improve facial contours, and correct occlusal problems and facial aesthetic issues caused by jaw misalignment. Traditional surgical planning methods highly rely on the subjective experience of clinical physicians and two-dimensional imaging assessments, with significant shortcomings in the accuracy and reproducibility of surgical outcome prediction [4].
