Clinical Observation of the Effect of Gracey Hand Scalers and Periodontal Ultrasonic Therapy on Patients with Chronic Periodontitis

Abstract：Objective: To observe the effect of Gracey hand scalers and periodontal ultrasonic therapy in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Methods: A total of 85 patients with chronic periodontitis who visited Anyang Sixth People's Hospital from May 2021 to March 2023 were selected as the study subjects and randomly divided into a control group (42 cases) and an observation group (43 cases). The control group was treated with Gracey hand scalers, while the observation group was treated with the Woodpecker ultrasonic therapy device. The clinical efficacy, periodontal indices before and one month after treatment, pain levels before and 24 hours, and one month after treatment, as well as masticatory function before and after treatment, were compared between the two groups. Results: The clinical efficacy of the observation group was better than that of the control group, with a statistically significant difference (χ²=5.308, P<0.05). One month after treatment, both groups showed improvement in gingival index, periodontal pocket depth, bleeding index, plaque index, and tooth mobility, with the observation group showing better improvement, and the differences were statistically significant (t=9.899, 4.371, 3.918, 5.717, 6.507, P<0.05). After treatment, the pain scores of both groups decreased, with the observation group having lower scores than the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (t=4.408, 10.082, P<0.05). Both groups showed improved masticatory function after treatment, with the observation group showing greater improvement, and the differences were statistically significant (t=4.310, 2.204, P<0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the use of Gracey hand scalers alone, periodontal ultrasonic therapy shows better effectiveness in the treatment of chronic periodontitis, with more thorough removal of microorganisms and dental plaque, leading to better prognosis.
