Effect of Planting Density on Agronomic Traits and Yield of Sugarcane
Abstract:To clarify the suitable planting density for high yield of sugarcane in the subtropical red soil area, this study used a completely randomized design with five density treatments: 5,000 buds/667m2 (M1), 6,000 buds/667m2 (M2), 7,000 buds/667m2 (M3), 8,000 buds/667m2 (M4), and 9,000 buds/667m2 (M5). The study analyzed the agronomic traits and yield of sugarcane. The results showed that as the planting density increased, the germination rate and tillering rate of sugarcane significantly decreased. The plant height first increased and then decreased, reaching the maximum value of 216.37 cm at M4. At the same time, the sugarcane yield and sugar yield were also highest under M4 treatment, reaching 3.76 t/667m2 (an increase of 6.94% compared to M1) and 0.777 t/667m2, respectively. In conclusion, under the conditions of this experiment, the planting density of 8,000 buds/667m2 could best coordinate the contradiction between the effective stem number of the population and individual growth, thereby achieving the synergistic optimization of yield and quality. It can be recommended as the appropriate planting density for high-yield sugarcane cultivation in the subtropical red soil area.
