Analysis of the Persistent Sandstorm Weather in Ulanqab City in March 2023
Abstract:Taking the persistent sandstorm weather in Ulanqab City on March 21-22, 2023, as the research object, this study uses conventional meteorological observation data such as ground and upper-air observations, sounding data, etc., to focus on analyzing the causes of this persistent sandstorm. The results show that the rapid development and intensification of a cold vortex at high altitude, and the continuous influence of the Mongolian cyclone at the surface, were the main causes of the sandstorm in Ulanqab City. At the same time, the temperature trough at high altitude led the temperature trough, indicating a strong baroclinicity of the system, while the dynamic conditions were favorable for the evolution of the cyclone and the formation and development of surface strong winds. In addition, significant changes in cold and warm advection at low levels significantly enhanced the Mongolian cyclone and strong winds. Before the occurrence of the sandstorm weather, the unstable layering was weak, and during the sandstorm, a neutral layering environment was present, which created favorable conditions for the occurrence and evolution of this sandstorm. Moreover, the CMA sandstorm concentration forecast was accurate, with its forecast intensity and movement path consistent with the actual situation.
