Comparative Analysis of Site Selection for Taolai Gorge Reservoir in Gansu Province
Abstract:The site selection for a reservoir project is a key part of the design process. The proposed reservoir is restricted by the provincial boundary between Gansu and Qinghai provinces, as well as the development status of the Taolai River section, limiting the available dam sites to the river section entering Gansu province up to the downstream developed section. Affected by the Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve and unfavorable factors such as geological faults, the range of dam site selection is small and the site selection is difficult. After checking the scope of the nature reserve, two dam sites that comply with the reserve policy were selected from the three proposed sites for comparison. A comparative analysis was conducted at the same precision level based on topographic and geological conditions, overall engineering layout, construction conditions, environmental soil and water conservation impact, and engineering investment, and the relatively optimal dam site was selected. From the comparative analysis of the site selection for the Taolai Gorge Reservoir, it can be summarized that the selection of the dam site should first pay attention to determining factors such as the environment, mineral resources, and cultural relics in the nature reserve. Then further geological exploration work should be carried out to clarify major geological structures affecting the dam site. Finally, other aspects should be compared and optimized. This study aims to provide references for other reservoir site selections.
