Diagnosis Report on Abnormal Death of Livestock in a Pig Farm Due to Illegal Introduction of Pigs
Abstract:In October 2023, abnormal deaths of pigs occurred in a pig farm in Taixiang County, Guizhou Province. To clarify the cause of the disease and reduce economic losses, this study collected anticoagulated blood and serum samples from 25 diseased pigs, as well as tissue samples from 2 dead pigs. Combined with clinical symptoms, the samples were tested for pseudorabies virus (PRV), highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), classical swine fever virus (CSFV), and African swine fever virus (ASFV) using ELISA and fluorescent PCR methods. The results showed that 25 samples were positive for PRV gE antibodies, with a positivity rate of 100%; 20 samples were positive for highly pathogenic PRRSV antibodies, with a positivity rate of 80%. The nucleic acid test results for ASFV and CSFV were both negative. However, the nucleic acid tests for highly pathogenic PRRSV and PCV2 were positive in the tissue samples of the two dead pigs. The results indicate that the pig herd introduced into the farm was co-infected with three viruses: highly pathogenic PRRSV, PRV, and PCV2, leading to large-scale death of pigs due to mixed housing. This experimental result can provide reference for the diagnosis, prevention, and disposal of similar diseases in other pig farms.
