Effect of Adding Lactobacillus reuteri to the Diet on the Reproductive Performance of Meat-Type Breeder Hens
Abstract:To investigate the effect of adding Lactobacillus reuteri to the diet of meat-type breeder hens on their reproductive performance, this experiment selected 144 44-week-old Arbor Acres (AA) meat-type breeder hens with similar body condition and egg production rate. They were randomly divided into two groups, with six replicates per group and 12 hens per replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, while the experimental group was fed an experimental diet formulated by adding 0.1% Lactobacillus reuteri to the basal diet. The results showed that compared with the control group, there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in feed-to-egg ratio, egg production rate, unqualified egg rate, average egg weight, daily egg production, levels of estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone, anti-Müllerian hormone, luteinizing hormone, and progesterone in the body, as well as the contents of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, total superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde in the serum. However, there was a significant increase (P < 0.01) in the total antioxidant capacity of the serum. In conclusion, adding 0.1% Lactobacillus reuteri to the diet can improve the reproductive performance of 44-week-old AA meat-type breeder hens to some extent by enhancing antioxidant capacity.
