Abstract：As one of the major diseases in production of barley,the smut fungus Ustilago hordei is distributed worldwide and has caused serious economic losses. However,it is considered to have medicinal and edible value in Traditional Chinese Medicine Science. This paper mainly introduces the category and physiological characteristics of Ustilago hordei,the mechanism of infection and interac-tion between the Ustilago hordei and host barley,its medicinal and edible value,establishment of genetic transformation technology sys-tem of Ustilago hordei as well as research progress of genome comparison and evolution.
